All About Love – bell hooks

So, I did a thing today. I told the truth. Even though I knew it may hurt the persons feelings, or not be received at all. Thing is, I’m currently reading this book titled All About Love by bell hooks.

The opportunity to speak the truth started to present itself but I backed out at the last minute – only speaking the truth under my breath as I walked away. A passage from my reading quickly came to the forefront of my mind and I stated to myself, “yes, you took the easy route and didn’t say anything”.

Not long after making the statement under my breath, another opportunity arose for me to speak my truth. I sat in the chair opposite the person and spoke my truth. Several times the person looked at me as if she couldn’t believe that I was actually saying what needed to be said: for years now.

Not only was l able to speak my truth, but as a result, the person was open to others speaking their truth as well. We have been under the weight of certain issues for years and today was the day that the conversations were all about love.

Don’t know if we’ll get lasting change from this exchange, but I do know that should the need arise again, I won’t hesitate to speak up. Because once others saw that I wasn’t cowering at the thought of confronting the person, they were able to speak out as well.

Always speak your truth in love.
