I’m fasting. I’m fasting in response to being on the Events Team for a Freedom Retreat at my church. I chose to give up my cell phone, or rather social media and texting for the week of the fast. I believe I can do it.

It’s not as hard as I thought it would be. Probably because I’ve tried to “give up” texting and social media before: with no luck. I would always inadvertently text one of my friends about “this or that” that just happened. Or, I’d see a notification on social media and would check it. However this time, I purposed to stay the course and keep my word. I let those that usually text me every day know that I would be offline for a while.
Don’t get me wrong, I had to discern each day by its own merit. It felt like putting puzzle pieces together that you knew wouldn’t fit; but you just had to try anyway. What I mean by this is that, even though I took a call from a friend during the fast, it was a call I was expecting because of a previous agreement between us. I was expecting a text but got a call instead. So, I wasn’t hard on myself for using the cell phone that time.
Now that the fast and the event are over, my thoughts: I actually felt like I had more time to get more things accomplished. I wasn’t consumed with sending a text or checking social media daily. I volunteered more. Took the time to really hear other people’s story as we talked. And I enjoyed the peace I walked in as a result of not being “chained” to a cell phone.
