Six years later, Ella was in a good place in her Single life. Not only had she quit her job to return to school to start on her new career choice, she’d also changed her church home and was now in an environment that taught her more than the salvation message. She learned that to be a Christian meant to be in a relationship with God. And He was using her new knowledge of Him to teach her how to relate to others. She was learning that not only reading the Word but acting out on the Word was increasing her Faith and belief in God and His leadership in her life. She now knew that His telling her she wasn’t ready for marriage was for her good. She really didn’t care for people as long as her needs got met in the process. Now, she was preparing to start a new career working primarily with the Public. Man, how her life had changed.
One day while preparing to leave a friend’s house in the neighborhood she grew up, Ella heard a male voice call her name. Upon turning around, she saw Micah and boy he still looked good. He had a close cut beard and mustache – a stark contrast to the clean baby face he had when they were in high school. And the same twinkling eyes she loved to look into. “Hey Micah” Ella said. “What are you doing here?” Micah had moved to another state not long after their brief affair (OK, one-night stand) many years ago. “I’m home visiting” stated Micah. “Girl, you still look good”. Oh, so we are going to go there like that are we? thought Ella. “Thanks, and you still look good yourself. How long are you home for?” “Just until Thursday, I have business to take care of on Friday. How about you give me your number and I’ll call you next time I’m here?” Micah responded. Ella gave him her new number.
Saturday morning as Ella left the hairdresser, she saw that she had a missed phone call from Micah. She listened to his voicemail message and laughed. “Hey, it’s me Micah. Thought you’d be home this morning and I’m passing through and wanted to see you. When we talked the other day you said you weren’t working so I know you’re not out shopping somewhere this Saturday morning. Give me a call when you can”. Ella couldn’t wait to call Micah. He must really be interested in her to have come back home so soon. Micah answered on the third ring, “hey baby, where have you been this morning?” “Just because I’m unemployed doesn’t mean a sista can’t get her hair done” laughed Ella. “Alright, I hear you. I’m leaving the barbershop now, can I come see you?” Micah asked. “Of course” stated Ella. “Do you know where I live?” “No, I don’t. How about we meet somewhere for lunch first, I’m ready to eat?” They decided on a place and met up.
Later, back at Ella’s house, they were snuggled up on the sofa talking. Catching up on old times and trying to make new memories. The conversation turned to why Ella had never married or even had children. She couldn’t let him know that she’d been pining for him for many of those years because she wasn’t sure yet if he wanted back in her life. That she longed for him to finally say that he wanted them to be together forever. And now didn’t seem like the time that he would make that declaration. Kissing him was the most enjoyable experience Ella had in a long time. It just felt right that they would now be able to enter into a committed relationship; one that she desired with all her heart. When Micah made a comment to Ella that gave her pause for concern, she wondered if he truly was at a place where he could give her his whole heart.
Listening to the Spirit of God, she asked Micah for clarity on his marital status since he’d told her earlier that “they weren’t together”. “Micah, are you divorced?” asked Ella. His response was slow in coming and Ella knew what he was gonna say, but she needed to hear the words anyway. “We are separated” stated Micah. “But I plan to get a divorce one day”. Knowing deep within herself that she shouldn’t entertain any more thoughts of her and Micah getting back together, Ella bid him a fond farewell. Two years later, Micah did get a divorce. And one year later, he married someone else.
